Elucidating the roles of polyunsaturated fatty acids in cardiac function

Dr. Chicco’s primary research focus is understanding the mechanisms and (patho)physiological consequences of altered polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) metabolism and membrane phospholipid composition associated with cardiometabolic diseases. His laboratory strives to conduct highly integrative and translational studies in rodent models based on clinically relevant observations in vivo, incorporating an array of physiological methods at the cell/molecular, organ and systemic levels. This seminar will highlight these areas of expertise in the context of a new project evaluating the role of PUFAs in cardiac function and stress tolerance utilizing novel gain and loss of function approaches in mice with variable expression of Fads2 encoding delta-6 desaturase, a central regulator of PUFA metabolism.
